“I don’t know,” I answered. “I
think it is just an impossible dream.
Granted, our relations with them
aren’t as bad as during the height of
the Cold War. But it is still no
utopia.”
“But the Soviet Union is talking
about reforms,” she said.
“Yes, I know, but it might just be
a show to make them look good.”
“Maybe,” she said, “But it never
hurts to hope. We can dream of a
world where everyone is free.”
At church that next Sunday and
at the university the next week it was
the topic of every conversation. But
as time went on, hope began to fade.
Nothing happened, and I doubted
anything ever would.
