As we pulled up to the gate of the
pasture, the car stopped with us. I
stepped out and went back to talk to
the driver of the pickup pulling the
horse trailer.
“This is the pasture we are going
to put him in.”
The man laughed a cynical laugh.
“What’s this ‘we’ stuff? Boy, I saw
them load this horse. I was only paid
to haul him. You couldn’t pay me
enough to get close to him. As far as
unloading him, you are on your own.”
I looked at him and at his partner
in the passenger seat. They just
grinned at me. I didn’t know what
else to do, so I just nodded. I did talk
them into backing the trailer as close
to the gate as possible without
blocking traffic on the road. I figured
