second time, and then asked, “Are we
any closer to seeing those freedoms
Reagan talked about a year ago? Will
the East Germans ever be free to go
where they want and be what they
want?”
“Fat chance,” I said out loud as I
shut off the radio. I couldn’t stand to
listen to any more. I understood in
some ways how those in East
Germany felt and had an affinity for
them. Granted, I was not hedged in
by a wall built by the government to
stop me from traveling, but I felt
imprisoned by my circumstances.
There were things I wanted to do,
places I wanted to go, and things I
wanted to be, but I didn’t have the
