to the other side of me. He turned
and walked to my other hand.
I felt he was close enough I could
make the jump, as long as he didn’t
move. I gave him the apple, then
reached out and placed my hands on
his back. He didn’t move. I laid my
chest on him. He didn’t move,
though I could feel him tremble a
little. I rested my weight on him, and
again he didn’t move, though he
turned his head to look at me.
I thought about how stupid I was.
I wasn’t even sure he was broken to
ride. But after being around him, I
felt he had to be. Finally, I carefully
reached my foot out. I could only get
up to my calf over him and still hold
on to the post. When I let my foot
rest on him, he trembled, as if he was
