He seemed to understand me
more than any animal I had ever been
around. As soon as I said it, he was
off. He made his run and came
panting back to me. I broke the apple
and gave him his piece.
I continued to work, to watch him
run, to feed him apples, and to talk to
him like he was human. There was so
much about him that made me feel
like he understood more than a person
might think he did.
With me protecting my fencing
equipment, he quit teasing me –
mostly. He did get hold of my pliers
once and took off with them. I
searched where I thought he had
dropped them, but couldn’t find them.
I told him I was mad and went back
to fencing. A few minutes later he
