He walked over to me, head
hanging down. He put his head right
beside me and looked out the corner
of his eyes as if checking to make
sure I saw how penitent he was.
“Right,” I said. “You haven’t
changed. You’d do it again as soon
as I turned my back.”
I finally finished picking up what
staples I could find, found my pliers
and fencing tool, and started back to
the fence. Cashmere followed me,
head still hanging. When I got to the
fence, I put my hammer in the bucket
with the other tools and put the
bucket between my feet to protect it.
Cashmere nudged me, and I laughed.
“All right. It’s hard to stay mad at
you. Go run and I’ll give you another
apple.”
