Confused, Jacob again begged her not to go
with Matthew, saying he could not stand to watch
it and would leave, and not return until he was
married to someone else. Doubting he would
ever truly leave her, she had challenged it and
even teased him that it was an idle threat. Her
own mother had pleaded with her to reconsider
what she was doing, saying that she was unfairly
playing with Jacob’s feelings, fearing the
consequences might be grave. Her mother loved
Jacob, and didn’t like Matthew. Rachel had
ignored the warnings, empowered by the
attention of the two men.
Truthfully, she had never thought she would
marry anyone but Jacob. He had always been her
best friend, and she had never had the same
