“Jacob, I’m . . .” She swallowed hard again, but
nothing could keep the tears from her voice.
“I’m so very sorry about what I did those many
years ago.”
He still refused to turn to face her, but spoke
into the night, almost as if to himself. “I guess it
really doesn’t matter anymore, does it?”
He started to walk away again, and she
called after him. “Jacob! Jacob, stop! Please,
stop!” He stopped, but still refused to turn to her.
The tears were now pouring down her face, and
trying to hide her overwhelming feelings was
futile. “Please, Jacob! I know that if there is
anyone in this world who has a right to say I
deserve what I got, it’s you! But please don’t.
For 18 years I have said it to myself. I still view
you as the best friend I ever had, and I can’t bear
