Matthew nodded. “Won’t you come into the
house?”

Senator Davis shook his head and spoke
sternly. “No. I’d prefer to stay here.”

Throwing a quick glance at Rachel,
Matthew headed toward the house. He knocked
and demanded loudly of the children, “Unlock
this door!” and then, with an embarrassed glance
back over his shoulder at Senator Davis, he
meekly added, “Please.” The door remained
latched until Rachel called to the children and
told them it was okay. As soon as the door was
open, Matthew disappeared into the house.

Senator Davis didn’t move or say anything,
and Rachel felt that, perhaps, she should also go
into the house. Yet she could not move,
