They argued for quite a while, until my dad again
told Daniel that the discussion was over, and he better
not go. “You are only fifteen, and you don’t know
what you are doing.”

Daniel stormed from the room, and by the look
on his face, I was sure he still planned to go.

I had only seen my dad that angry a few times.
One had been a few months earlier when the news told
had us that a man named Martin Luther King Jr. had
been killed. My dad had become very upset. I didn’t
understand, so he tried to explain it to me.

He talked about how he had lived in the South for
a couple of years, and he said that people who had
black skin were often treated badly just because their
skin was a different color. He said that Mr. King was a
man who was trying to correct things that were wrong.
