      “Why?” Daniel countered angrily. “You are

totally against the Vietnam War. I’ve heard you say so
a thousand times!”

      “Yes. But by burning the flag, a person is not just
protesting the war and the actions of our country’s
leaders, but they are symbolically expressing animosity
toward everything about our country, including the
futuristic vision upon which it was built. It is a
venomous, distasteful, appalling expression that blights
the sacrifice of those who have died to give us the
freedoms we enjoy.”

      Daniel’s voice rose with emotion. “So here we sit
in our little house, on our little farm, in our little town,
doing nothing, saying nothing, being nothing!”

      “It’s okay if you do something as long as it is
something right,” my dad said, his own voice rising. “I
don’t mind if you protest the war, but burning the flag
is not a protest of the war but a protest of everything
