but I knew better than to question her further. As I
pulled out shovelful after shovelful of soil, she directed
me to spread most of it around rather than pile it.

      It took a good hour or more of digging to get it the
way she wanted it. She then directed me to dig two
more holes for posts: one at the back corner of the
garage and one on the border of hers and Mrs. Crabby’s
properties. As we worked, the curious skunk sat
watching us. But after a while, it waddled toward the
debris pile. Grandma tied the stick ends together in a
long length and reached it toward the skunk to keep it
away.

      The skunk threateningly flipped around and put
its tail in the air. Knowing it isn’t too smart to make a
skunk mad, I wondered if Grandma was thinking clearly.
