had dripped down the side of the house, and there was a
lot to do. As I scrubbed, Grandma kept moving things
around on the alley side of her garage.
While I was getting a bucket to stand on so I
could reach one of the eggs, I saw Grandma down on
all fours in the alleyway. Curiosity got the best of me,
and I went over and looked down at her. “Grandma,
what are you doing?”
Grandma frowned at me for leaving my work, but
she answered my question. “I’m looking for evidence.”
“Evidence of what?”
“Evidence of who the no-good scoundrels are that
keep doing this. The police chief said he can’t do
anything without evidence. I don’t think he wants to
find any. I’m sure one of the boys is his own. Mark my
words, that police chief couldn’t find evidence if it hit
him in the face with a two-by-four. Meanwhile, that
group his kid runs around with is heading for prison.”
I went back to my cleaning. Even when I finished
