Grandma scowled at me. “Then go in the garage
and put on some old clothes and some gloves. And
hurry! That meat won’t last forever.”

      I was soon back with the items. Grandma raked
the pile of debris toward the hole. The wary skunk
didn’t like that and moved toward us. Grandma quickly
grabbed the long set of poles and kept it at bay. The
skunk let out a strong spray in our direction, and though
we were out of range, the smell made me cough and
choke. But I dared not disobey Grandma, so I hurried
to smooth the debris out in the hole as much as I could
“to make it look natural.” Grandma handed me the long
stick and told me to keep the skunk away while she
finished. She laid down a layer of branches on top and
then sprinkled a thin layer of dirt on top of that. When
she finished, other than the fact that the mound was
slightly higher, it was hard to tell that anything had
been changed.
