and when it showed an inclination to wander away
again, Grandma sent me after some more hamburger—a
big expense on her small income. Obviously, she was
up to something that was important to her.

      By the time we finished putting up the wires, the
skunk was nearly done with the second batch of
hamburger. Grandma carefully used the rake to pull the
pan toward the garage while the skunk slowly,
cautiously followed it. Grandma backed away as she
pulled it. Once she had the pan where she wanted it,
she set the line of poles down by the fence until the
smell of the skunk spray could wear off of them.

      She turned to face me. “Well, that’s a good start,
don’t you think?”

      I said it was even though I didn’t know what we
had started.

      As we watched the skunk eating from the pan,
Grandma smiled at me. “Would you say that the skunk
is rather fat?” I thought it ought to be after two pans of
