Instinctively, I took off running after
him, but I quickly fell behind, and I
knew catching him was impossible.
But he couldn’t run very fast
carrying a hammer in his mouth, so
he soon dropped it and made a run
around the pasture. I retrieved the
hammer and walked back to my fence
while Cashmere finished his lap. He
joined me and nudged me for an
apple.
“Hey, I’m not giving you an
apple. You were a naughty horse,
stealing my hammer.”
He backed up and leaned his head
to one side and slightly down.
“Oh, don’t give me the puppy
horse eyes,” I said. “You aren’t even
sorry you took it.” But he continued
to look at me like he couldn’t believe
