couldn’t explain the feeling, but there
was a thrill that ran through me as I
watched him, and Cashmere seemed
friendlier to me every day.
The second weekend after he had
arrived, after I had taken care of the
other horses, I loaded up a little grain
and some fencing tools and headed
over to the pasture. Cashmere and
Tor were grazing side by side as if
they were best friends. A person
wouldn’t have any reason to think
they had ever fought at all. The
mares, for their part, just acted like
Cashmere was another horse, and he
seemed to like it that way.
As soon as I pulled up, the horses
came running, with Cashmere at the
lead. I poured out the grain,
spreading it out so everybody could
