foundation, Rachel took an evening stroll up the
hill. Mother Davis understood Rachel’s feelings
about the new house and helped distract Emily so
Rachel could slip off without her.
Rachel walked slowly along the path that
wound from her house through the meadow and
up to the ridge. She had traversed it many times
over the past 18 years to sit and reminisce, but
now it had more significance. She knew she
would not be able to go up there much longer.
When she arrived at the top, she found the
spot where she and Jacob had laid out their
blanket for that picnic many years before. She
was glad the house was being built far enough
away that this spot was not yet disturbed. She sat
down and looked out over the lake and listened to
the sounds of the evening, the music of nature.
