She and Jacob were an inseparable duo. She
recalled their tree house in the big oak behind her
house where they had played for years, even
pretending they were husband and wife.
Her mind snapped back to that first formal
dance again. He had come to pick her up,
looking so handsome. He told her she was
beautiful, which made her feel beautiful. He
always treated her like a queen, and he was
always the perfect gentleman. Everyone,
including Rachel, expected them to marry right
after she graduated.
But then Jacob’s father started developing
dementia, which created a serious problem. Mr.
and Mrs. Davis had tried for ten years to have a
child, and when Matthew had finally come, they
had been so excited. They had given him
