Suddenly her churning emotions boiled over, and
she started to sob, her tears flowing freely.
The memories flooded back, just as if it had
been yesterday. She remembered sitting there on
that blanket with Jacob’s arm around her. He had
told her his dad had promised him this piece of
ground overlooking Jensen’s Lake, and assured
her that he was going to build them a home right
there. She had leaned against him and, together,
they had watched the orange glow of the setting
sun.
She recognized that she had come up there
all those times over the past years to try to
rekindle the feelings of that day, trying to erase
the pain from the mistake she had made. Indeed,
there was a home going in now, and it belonged
to Jacob, but she wasn’t going to be part of it. It
