Rachel didn’t think she could wait until
tomorrow, but Mother Davis was tired, and
stubbornly refused to talk more about it.
Rachel was glad she had the next day off
from work. She got up to make breakfast,
picking up the phone a half a dozen times to call
Camilla, but each time she realized it was too
early to be polite. She decided that 7:00 would
be the earliest she should call, but by 6:30 she
could stand it no longer. Besides, she
rationalized, Camilla had been a farmer’s wife
and was used to getting up early.
Camilla sounded cheerful, as usual, and
agreed that Rachel could come to read the letters,
but only after Mother Davis got on the phone to
tell her it was okay. Rachel had no sooner sent
the boys to the bus, than she was kissing Emily
