against Rachel for some time. Finally, Rachel
pulled up a chair facing Mother Davis.

      “Mother, how did you know he was
coming?”

      “He wrote to me.”
      “He wrote to you? When? I never saw a
letter.”
      Mother Davis shook her head. “He didn’t
send his letters here.”
      “Letters? You mean there was more than
one?”
      Mother Davis nodded. “I got the first one
about a year after he left.”
      “How and where did you get them?”
