Jacob was quiet for some time, unmoving,
still facing away from her. The silence was
uncomfortable, but Rachel didn’t dare say more.
Finally, when Jacob did speak, his voice was
quieter, but still callous. “No one deserves what
you’ve been through.” He paused for a moment,
then continued. “But no one deserves what
happened to me, either.”
With that, Jacob strode swiftly into the
night, leaving Rachel sobbing on the porch.
