Mother Davis’s Secret

      It took Rachel a long time to gain control of
her feelings. When she finally did, she stepped
back inside and quietly shut the door. Mother
Davis was still in her chair, her knitting sitting on
her lap, her hands idle, and tears coursing down
her cheeks.

      Rachel knelt down beside her and looked up
at her. “You knew he was coming, didn’t you?”

      Mother Davis nodded. “Yes, but I didn’t
think it would be like this.” She started to cry
openly as she spoke. “Somehow I thought he
would come back, and we’d all be so happy to
see each other that . . .”

      Her voice trailed off into sobbing. Rachel
