Mother Davis seemed to sense Rachel’s
frustration with her and spoke kindly. “Rachel,
I’m sorry. I wanted to tell you. I know how
badly you wanted to know. But I was so afraid
that, somehow, Matthew would find out and
punish us, or that Jacob would find out that I told
you and quit writing.”
Rachel took some deep breaths and tried to
act like it didn’t matter, though she knew it did.
“So, what can you tell me about him?”
“Only a little. I’m not sure I can even get it
all straight. Perhaps the best thing to do would
be to let you read his letters.”
“You still have them?”
“Not here. I didn’t dare. They are at
Camilla’s. We can get them tomorrow.”
