Christmas morning was dismal to her even
though when her children opened their presents,
they were kind to thank her for what little they
received. When Emily asked her when they
would be going to Uncle Jacob’s, Rachel told her
it would be at 1:00. For the rest of the morning
the excited little girl kept coming and asking
what time it was, and how much longer it would
be. To Emily, it couldn’t come soon enough, but
for Rachel it came all too quickly. It seemed it
was no time at all before they were loading into
the old station wagon. If it hadn’t been for
Mother Davis, they probably would have just
walked the path through the meadow.
Before the car had even pulled to a stop,
Emily was pounding on John to let her out. He
had no sooner opened the door and stepped out
