the screen door wide. She was nothing like
Rachel expected. Though she was slender, she
was not petite. Her blond hair was pulled back in
a bun, and she didn’t look at all like a model, but
just like she could be anybody’s mother. She
looked at them with blue eyes that mirrored
James’s. Rachel soon found herself in the foyer
of the house she had admired for so long, being
hugged like a long-lost sister who had wandered
home after many years.
“So you’re Rachel,” Anna said. “It’s nice to
finally meet you.”
Rachel was so surprised that she stumbled
all over her words trying to respond in kind.
Anna swept Mother Davis into a big bear hug,
too. “Why, you must be Mother. As young as
you look, I would have thought you were Jacob’s
