She stopped and looked around. “Where did
James go?”

Abraham laughed. “He took Emily to see
his Christmas presents.”

Rachel looked around and, for the first time,
realized Emily wasn’t there. Anna laughed.
“Well, anyway, that was James who opened the
door.”

She laughed again with her contagious
laugh. Rachel had not wanted to like Anna,
feeling it would be easier that way, but she found
herself instantly drawn to her. Anna was so
friendly and kind. Rachel finally found her voice
and introduced her sons, adding, “. . . and, of
course, Emily is the little girl.”
