step to the door. “I’ll just tell her you declined.”
With that he walked outside. Rachel
stepped into the living room and could see the
tears rolling down Mother Davis’s wrinkled
cheeks. Summoning all of her inner strength,
Rachel ran out the door and called after him.
“Jacob! Jacob, please stop!”
Jacob stopped, but, as before, he didn’t turn
to face her.
“Jacob,” she said, “I understand how you
feel about me, but, please, don’t take it out on
Mother Davis and my children. Please invite all
of them. I can just stay here and read a book or
something.”
Jacob didn’t say anything for a long time.
Finally, slowly, he turned, looked at her,
breathed a big sigh, and said “No, Mother is
