Jacob’s voice rose slightly. “Mother, if you
don’t want to come to my house, just say so.”
Mother Davis’s voice sounded as if she
might cry. “Jacob, you know that is not what I
meant. I know you feel we deserted you, and I so
want to meet your family. But what family you
still have you are now deserting.”
Jacob’s voice was terse. “Oh, this is my
fault now, is it? She chose what she wanted all
of those years ago and it wasn’t me, and now it’s
my fault because I don’t choose to spend time
with her?”
“Jacob, she is sorry for what happened.
She’s been through enough. Can’t you see that?
Why can’t you forgive her? And what about the
