But then Mother Davis’s eyesight started to fail.
They spent quite a bit of money trying to help
her, but it was to no avail.

It had been almost four years since Rachel
had seen Matthew, when he suddenly showed up.
He had found out his mother had sold the house,
and he felt he was entitled to some of the money.
Rachel told him to get off of their property or she
would call the sheriff. He had left, but not
without some threats of his own. Her threat to
call the sheriff deterred him for a short time, but
she knew he’d be back.

She was afraid and didn’t know what to do.
For the first time in a long time she started
praying to God for help, but she really wondered
