Rachel kept a vigil on the house on Pine
Ridge, watching the walls climb higher as her
spirits sank lower. Soon it was closed in and she
couldn’t go inside anymore, yet after tucking her
children in bed each night, she made her way up
there to look in the windows. It was going to be
a beautiful home, though it was smaller and
simpler than she expected it to be considering
how rich she heard Jacob was.
When she wasn’t at work she watched the
workers coming and going all day. It seemed
that half of the county was up there at one time or
another. Rachel had doubted it could be ready by
Christmas as Jacob had indicated, but she
