children appropriately. She started trying to
teach them right from wrong, though she didn’t
bring religion into it. Somehow, deep in her
heart, she knew she needed to start taking them
to church, praying, and doing other religious
things, but she felt God had abandoned her. As
she thought about it now, she realized it was she
who had abandoned God.

      She did everything she could to take care of
her family, but the bills kept mounting. The
hospital expenses for Emily’s birth seemed to put
them into an ever downward spiral. She had to
skimp on almost everything. She knew part of
her sons’ problems at school were from the
teasing they received because of their poor
clothes, but she had no money to buy them more.
She tried to stitch their clothes as best she could,
