her in her garden all afternoon, she said she had an
errand or two for me to run first. She handed me some
money. “I want you to go down to the five-and-dime
store and get me an electric cord. Ask Sam to help you.
And don’t talk to strangers.”

      As I was about to leave, she stopped me and gave
me an envelope that had the name “Finch” on it. “Take
this to the senior citizen center for me. And don’t talk to
any strangers.”

      That was the second time she said not to talk to
strangers, and I thought about it. Everyone pretty much
knew everyone else in town, and if someone moved in
from somewhere else, half the town was on their
doorstep within an hour to meet them.

      It was halfway across town to the senior citizen
center, and I walked all five blocks as slowly as I could.
I didn’t want to get back any faster than I had to. The
thought of helping plant rows of corn and potatoes
didn’t excite me.
