store, and a soda fountain. I stopped at the gold fish
tank and tapped on the glass. I loved to see the fish
scatter. I was just tapping on the glass for the fourth
time when I felt a hand heavy on my shoulder. I turned
and looked up into Sam’s face. Sam was a fixture of
the town. He wasn’t just the store clerk; he was also the
pharmacist. He knew everyone and everything. I
figured he was about a thousand years old and had
landed here with Noah.

      I held up the money. “My grandma sent me to
buy an electric cord.”

      Sam just grunted and led me to the electric aisle.
There were lots of sizes. I didn’t know which one she
wanted. When Sam asked what it was for, I shrugged.
“An electric fence, I think.”

      He knew Grandma well enough not to ask more.
We settled on one of the medium-sized ones. I gave
him the money, and he made my change. I stuffed the
money in my pocket, and with one last, long look at the
