other times when it would ring, someone would say, “That’s our ring. Someone better get it.” I was never allowed to use the phone, and that just made me more curious, especially when it rang and we weren’t supposed to touch it. I was in the kitchen, wishing for something to do, when the phone rang with one of the “other” rings. No one was around, and I was curious, so I got a chair and pulled it from off of the wall. I heard two voices on it. “Hello, is Leslie there?” some guy said. “This is her,” a girl’s voice answered. “Hi, Leslie,” the guy’s voice said. “This is Jack.” “Oh, Jack,” Leslie’s voice said, “I’m so glad you called. I was really wanting to talk to you.” There were some radio programs my mom wouldn’t let us listen to. She said they weren’t appropriate. I wondered if the rings that weren’t for us were like that. Maybe Mom didn’t want me to listen because it was one of those mushy programs she always made me shut off. I was more convinced of this as Jack asked Leslie to go with him to the movies. “Oh, I’d love to go,” Leslie said. “The plot sickens,” I said. I didn’t know what it meant, but that’s what Daniel always says just before Mom makes us shut it off. “Is there somebody on this line?” Leslie asked. This was a new twist to the radio I didn’t quite understand. It was almost as if I was part of the program. I thought that was neat. I decided to see if I truly was. “It’s me,” I said. “Well, you better get off, if you know what’s good for you,” she threatened.
