had come to recognize at the first of these conversations. The reason I say at the first is because, as they went on, she always got madder and madder, and her voice was not as soft. “This is Robert,” the man’s voice said. “Oh, Robert,” Leslie said. “I’m so glad you called. I was really hoping to talk to you.” “Robert?” I asked. “What happened to Jack?” “Jack?” Robert asked. “Get off the phone,” Leslie demanded, her voice no longer sweet. I thought that was about the fastest I had heard her voice go from sweet to mad. “Jack?” Robert asked again. “Yeah, Jack,” I answered. “Who’s Jack?” “Jack is nobody,” Leslie answered. “I like Jack,” I said. “He is always nice to me.” “Who’s Jack?” Robert asked again. “Jack is the other guy she always talks to,” I explained. “Is that so? That wouldn’t happen to be Jack Dayton, would it?” Robert asked. “I don’t know,” I answered. “He just goes by Jack.” “You little twerp,” Leslie fumed. “You better get off of this phone, or I’m going to break every bone in your...” “Wait a minute,” Robert interrupted. “Is it Jack Dayton, or isn’t it?” “Yes,” Leslie replied quietly. “Well, Leslie, Jack is one of my good friends. I can’t be asking you out or anything if you are going out with Jack.” “I’m not anymore,” Leslie said.
