little holes in it, so I put my finger in the holes and turned it, like I had seen my parents do. This made an interesting clickety-clicking sound as the little wheel went around. “Quit dialing, you moron,” Leslie yelled. “Can’t you see we’re on the phone?” “Nope, I can’t see you,” I answered. Jack laughed again, so I laughed. “I like this little guy,” Jack said. “He’s pretty sharp.” I didn’t know what it meant to be sharp, but the way Jack said it, I knew it was good. Leslie didn’t seem to have the same opinion. “Maybe we should get back together when we can have some privacy,” she said. “Sure,” Jack replied. They each said goodbye. Then there was a strange clicking sound, and then it buzzed. It sounded like our radio did when we weren’t getting a channel - just a steady buzzing sound, and no music or talking coming out. I tried clicking the handle on the phone. I tried changing the channel, but it only went to a steady beeping, then went quiet. I figured something must have gone wrong with it, so I quickly put it back before someone came along and blamed me for breaking it. After that, I realized that if the phone rang that same ring, I could pick it up, and it was almost always Leslie and Jack. On the radio, I always knew when a certain program was coming on by the music. On the phone, it was obviously the ring that told a person who was on. I began to like Jack more and more, and Leslie less and less. He was always nice to me, and she was always mean. Then one day, there was another guy on the phone. “Hello,” the man’s voice said. “Is Leslie there?” “This is her,” I heard Leslie say in the sweet voice I
