I was sitting in the second row.
I liked being close to the front
because it was easier to participate
in class, and I found I did better.
Bonnie was also in the second row,
but across the room. I thought
about how I would love to sit by
her since she was the only girl and
was pretty. I knew that most
people always sit in the same seat,
and for an instant, I considered
arriving early the next day to claim
the seat next to Bonnie’s. But I
decided that would be too obvious,
and she would probably choose a
different seat to be away from me.
