While the other students
returned to dancing, Sherry and I
went to the instructor. “Being in
this class isn’t going to work for
us,” Sherry told him. “We’d like
to sign out.”
We always carried extra
add/drop cards the first few days of
class for just such a purpose.
Sherry handed hers to him, and he
signed it. I held mine out, but he
didn’t even pretend he would take
it. Instead, he said, “I’m sorry, but
I don’t sign boys out of the class.
You’re in for the semester.”
“But I’m only a second-
semester freshman, and I’ve never
taken first-semester dance,” I said,
“let alone second or third. Sherry
