My oldest daughter, Kaylynn,
who was only three, pulled on my
pant leg. “Me go wif you?”
In the past five months I had
taken her with me quite often when I
just needed to feed. I had bought her
a small plastic bucket and would put
some apples in it that she could carry
to the horses. She knew their names
and thought all horses were named
Jackie or Patches, depending on the
color. If she saw a horse that was a
solid color, she would say, “Wook,
there’s a Jackie.” If it was more of a
spotted horse, she would say,
“There’s a Patches.”
She loved the horses. She had
learned to hold an apple out in the flat
palm of her little hand, and the horses
