“Just for Christmas?” Emily pleaded. Mary turned to Justin. “I’m sorry. She gets an idea in her head and there’s not much changing it.” Justin smiled. “I’ve noticed. But it’s no problem. She’s a wonderful little girl.” They got up and continued walking. “Could you still be my big brother?” Emily asked Justin. Justin looked at the little girl bundled up in his arms and smiled. “Sure, kid.” When they arrived on Ironwood Drive Justin thought for a minute they must have taken a wrong turn. He had never been in this part of town and he thought surely no one could live in these apartment buildings. But very soon they were at Mary’s rickety door and she was unlocking it. As they stepped inside Mary seemed embarrassed. “Well, this is it. Home sweet home.” “This is it, huh?” Justin said, looking around the dimly lit room. “Nice and cozy.” “That’s Emily’s bed,” Mary said motioning to the bed by the wall. As he was setting her in the bed Emily threw her arms around his neck and gave him a hug. “Goodnight, Justin.” Justin swallowed hard. No one had given him a 36
