What do you want to read?” “How about ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas?” “But it isn’t even Thanksgiving yet,” Justin objected. “The stores are all decorated for Christmas.” “The stores are decorated for Christmas in July.” “But in that story both the mommy and daddy are there for Christmas.” Justin sighed. “Okay. That’s cool.” “What does cool mean?” Emily asked. “It means uh, great, neat, I like it. Things like that.” “Oh,” Emily said, pausing for just a minute. Then pulling herself up like Justin she said, “Cool!” Justin looked at her and smiled. Emily found the book in the little bookshelf and handed it to Justin. She then pulled Timmy from the playpen and carried him over to Justin. “Can Timmy sit on your lap?” she asked. “He likes stories.” Before Justin even had a chance to answer she had plopped Timmy onto his lap. Justin looked uncomfortable for a minute. It was obvious he had never spent much time with children, let alone held one on his lap, but as Timmy looked up at him and grinned 31
