Justin choked at hearing his mother’s name but managed to nod. “They were good friends of mine in high school,” Mary continued. “Tell them hi for me, will you?” Justin stuffed his hands in his pockets and looked at the floor. “Sure.” “I need to put Emily’s coat on her,” Mary said, reaching for an old red and white coat. “Here, let me.” Justin took the coat and carefully helped Emily sit up so he could put it on her. “Momma?” Emily said, still groggy. “I’m here, Emily. You need to wake up enough so that we can go home.” “I could carry her,” Justin said. “We live clear over on Ironwood Drive.” “That’s fine. I need the fresh air.” As they stepped out into the night a cold breeze whipped little bits of falling snow around them and Justin pulled the blanket he had wrapped around Emily a little tighter. He could feel the cold through his leather jacket and knew Emily must be feeling it too. All was silent as if the world was holding its breath. As they started to walk the only sound was the crunching snow under their feet. Some flakes of snow touched Emily’s face and she woke up. “Momma, could you be Justin’s mommy for 34
