soon Timmy was sleeping soundly. Justin could feel his own eyelids starting to droop so he settled himself as comfortably as he could in his chair. Judge Jensen looked over as the three of them slept. Of the three young men, Justin was by far the one who was in trouble the most. He had been in her courtroom before. She looked at him with Emily by his side and saw his gentleness with Timmy and hoped it would be the last time she would see him in court. Children have a way of softening a person’s heart when nothing else will. Justin didn’t know how long it had been, but when he felt Timmy being lifted from his arms he realized he was quite stiff from sleeping in the chair. He blinked, trying to wake up, as he looked up into the face of a tired, yet lovely woman. Under her coat Justin could see she had a dusting of flour on her shirt and he knew immediately who she must be. “Oh, hi,” Justin said. “You must be Emily’s mother.” “Yes. My name is Mary Harris.” “Glad to meet you,” Justin said, as he moved Emily, who was still sleeping against him. He stood and offered his hand. “I’m Justin. Justin Jackson.” “Are you Fred and Alice Jackson’s son?” Mary asked. 33
