“What’s all settled?” “That me and Timmy get a ride in your new car.” “I didn’t say that, I just said....” Justin looked down at her as she grinned up at him. He stopped, laughed, and just shook his head. “Sure, kid. You can have a ride in my car.” They spent a lot of time visiting. Justin found he even enjoyed sitting on the floor playing with Emily and building roads for the matchbox cars to drive on. He was amazed at how smart she was and how much she liked cars. He talked about torque and engine size and many other things. His friends would get bored with this very quickly but Emily just seemed to soak it up. Before he knew it a few hours had passed. “Mr. Jackson,” Judge Jensen said coming up to them, “I’m afraid it’s time for Emily and Timmy to sleep.” “Oh, okay,” Justin said, standing up and heading for the door. “Can we have a story?” Emily asked. Judge Jensen cleared her throat just as Justin reached for the knob. He turned back to look at her. “A story?” she said, signaling toward Emily. He realized he was supposed to stay the whole time, not just until they slept. He took a deep breath and came back in and dropped into a chair, resigned to what 30
