“Oh, I don’t have a car,” Mary said. “You don’t have a car?” Sam couldn’t believe it. Everyone he knew had a car. “Where do you live?” “In the apartment building on Ironwood Drive.” Sam was shocked. That was miles away. “But that’s clear across town, and in the worst part of town. How are you going to get there?” “We’ll walk,” Mary answered. “I’ll go with you.” “Oh, no, I couldn’t ask...” “I insist,” Sam interrupted. “You carry Timmy and I’ll carry Emily.” “Thank you,” Mary said. She seemed grateful for the help. Sam pulled Emily’s coat around her shoulders and then wrapped a blanket around her as Mary bundled Timmy. As they stepped out into the night air, a cold blast of wind from the north swirled around them. The sky was clear and the stars sparkled above as they walked. The moon was almost full and moonlight glistened beautifully on the ground around them. The trees cast shadows that shimmered in the moonlight as if they were dancing. As Mary and Sam walked the whole world seemed asleep. The only sound was the shrill wail of a police siren fading in the distance. They walked past the center of town and the 17
