Sam asked. “Oh, no. Daddy left a long time ago. I got this when three guys tried to steal Timmy’s Halloween candy. I didn’t mind when they stole mine, but when they tried to take Timmy’s, I held on to his bag real tight and they jerked me off of my feet and I hit my face on the sidewalk.” The three young men looked at each other. It was embarrassing to see the result of what they had probably done. She had tried to protect her brother and had been hurt. Sam slid into the chair by where Emily had been playing on the floor. “I’m going to go ahead and take tonight’s shift,” he said to the other two. “You can go sign up now. I’ve got all of my hours clear through to Christmas.” “Christmas!” both Tom and Justin exclaimed. Then Justin shook his head in disbelief. “I can’t believe you guys are really going to go through with this.” “Maybe the judge is right,” Tom said, heading over to the desk to sign up. “Maybe there are some things we need to learn.” Justin rolled his eyes. “Great! Now you’re beginning to sound like my father.” He reluctantly joined Tom at the desk where they both signed up for 12
