sleeping soundly in Sam’s arms. Sam thought about how long it had been since he had rocked one of his little brothers or sisters to sleep. He had forgotten how peaceful that feeling was. He could feel his own eyelids drooping. He laid his head back and soon he too was asleep. Judge Jensen looked over at the three of them. It made a sweet picture with the two small children snuggled up with the big, strong athlete. She smiled. They had slept a long time when Sam felt something lifted from his arms. “I’m awake, Mom,” he mumbled. He started coming around and soon realized he wasn’t at home. “Where am I?” “You are at the Women’s Crisis Center,” a soft voice said. “Oh, yeah. I remember,” Sam said. Sam looked up to see a pretty woman who was probably in her mid thirties. She looked tired and worried. She was hugging Timmy and stroking his soft hair. “I’m Mary Harris. These are my children.” “They sure are adorable little kids,” Sam said. Mary smiled. “Thank you. I kind of think so.” “I suppose you’re here to take them home?” Sam asked. “Yes.” “I’ll help you carry them out to the car.” 16
