question. “What story would you like?” “How about Tommy and Tippy?” “Tommy and Tippy?” Sam questioned. He had never read that one before. “Yes,” Emily said. “It’s one of my favorite stories because it has a puppy in it.” She ran to get it from the book shelf at the side of the room. She set it on the chair beside Sam, then went to the playpen and pulled Timmy out. She put him in Sam’s lap. “Can Timmy sit on your knee?” “Uh, sure,” Sam said looking at the cute little boy who was already on his lap. He opened the book and started to read. “Tommy was a little boy who lived on a farm. He had many animals that were his friends. He had a calf named Harry and a rabbit named Hopper. He had a chicken named Squawk and a turkey named Gobble. But his very, very best friend was his puppy named Tippy. Tommy and Tippy went everywhere together. When you found one you always found both...” As Sam read, Emily laid her head against him. It wasn’t long until he could hear her rhythmic breathing and knew she was asleep. He finished the book and closed it, then laid it on the floor, moving carefully so as not to wake Emily. He then gently rocked Timmy. Soon his eyes started to flutter and right away he was 15
